As Europe advances towards a more sustainable, digital and resilient economy, supply chains are becoming increasingly complex and interconnected. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain are helping organizations improve transparency, resource efficiency and traceability, supporting the transition to more circular and sustainable business models.
These developments are reflected in the 3D-CIRCULAR Project, a flagship European initiative co-funded under the Digital Europe Programme, in which the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS) participates as a partner. Bringing together 32 organizations from across Europe, the project aims to equip current and future professionals with the skills needed to support Europe’s Twin Digital and Green Transition.
A major milestone of the project is the launch in September 2026 of a portfolio of fully online postgraduate and doctoral programmes, including the MBA in Digital Deep Tech Driven Circular Economy, MSc in Digital Deep Tech Driven Circular Economy, MSc by Research, PhD, and DBA programmes. Designed to combine advanced digital technologies with circular economy principles, these programmes will provide learners with practical knowledge that can be applied across a wide range of industries and business environments.
Among the courses offered is “AI and Blockchain for Circular Supply Chain Management.” The course explores how advanced digital technologies can help organizations address some of the most pressing challenges facing modern supply chains, including traceability, transparency, security, resource efficiency and sustainability performance. By combining the analytical capabilities of AI with the trust and transparency enabled by Blockchain, organizations can create smarter and more resilient supply chains that support circular economy objectives.
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being used to improve forecasting, optimize logistics, identify inefficiencies and support data-driven decision-making. At the same time, Blockchain technologies can enhance transparency by creating secure and immutable records of transactions, materials and product movements throughout the value chain. Together, these technologies enable organizations to track products more effectively, verify sustainability claims, facilitate responsible sourcing and support circular business models based on reuse, repair, remanufacturing and recycling.
A key feature of the course is its emphasis on the role of international standards in supporting the trustworthy and responsible adoption of these technologies. As AI and Blockchain become increasingly integrated into business operations, standards provide the common language, governance frameworks and best practices needed to ensure consistency, interoperability and trust.
Students are introduced to ISO 22739:2024, which establishes a common vocabulary for Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, helping organizations and stakeholders communicate more effectively within rapidly evolving digital ecosystems. They also explore ISO/TR 3242:2022, which presents practical Blockchain use cases across different sectors, and ISO/TR 23455:2019, which examines the role of smart contracts and their interactions within Blockchain systems. Together, these standards provide a foundation for understanding how Blockchain technologies can support transparency and collaboration across circular value chains.
The course also examines the rapidly developing landscape of Artificial Intelligence standardization. Learners are introduced to ISO/IEC 22989:2022, which provides fundamental AI concepts and terminology, establishing a shared understanding of AI technologies and their applications. Particular attention is given to ISO/IEC 23894:2023, which offers guidance on AI risk management and supports organizations in identifying, assessing and addressing risks associated with AI systems throughout their lifecycle.
Students further explore ISO/IEC 42001:2023, the world’s first international management system standard specifically for Artificial Intelligence. The standard provides organizations with a structured framework for establishing, implementing and continually improving AI governance practices. Complementing this approach, ISO/IEC 8183:2023 provides guidance on the AI data lifecycle, highlighting the importance of data quality, integrity and responsible data management in the development and deployment of AI solutions.
Recognizing that resilient supply chains require not only innovation but also effective security and risk management, the course also introduces ISO 28000:2022 Security and resilience — Security management systems — Requirements. This standard supports organizations in identifying and managing security risks throughout supply chains, helping improve operational continuity and resilience in an increasingly interconnected global environment.
Through the study of these standards and digital technologies, participants gain insight into how organizations can leverage AI and Blockchain to create supply chains that are not only more efficient, but also more transparent, secure and sustainable. The course demonstrates how international standards can bridge the gap between technological innovation and practical implementation, enabling organizations to adopt emerging technologies with greater confidence and credibility.
As Cyprus’s national standards body, CYS plays a strategic role in bringing this expertise into the 3D-CIRCULAR educational ecosystem. Through its knowledge of international standardization and best practices, CYS contributes to the development of educational content that helps learners understand both the opportunities and responsibilities associated with digital transformation and circular economy implementation.
