In recent years, a series of unprecedented shocks have hit the world. In response, Europe is undertaking a process of renewal: from the fight against global warming to creating a thriving digital ecosystem, from fostering a sustained and fair economic recovery to the quest for strategic autonomy, 2023 is shaping up to be a decisive year for designing Europe’s future – not least as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Single Market.

In this context, European standards can play a strategic role. They serve as key tools to provide trustworthy and market-based solutions to present and future challenges. More importantly, European standards are instrumental to support the EU’s priorities, such as the twin green and digital transitions and the search to secure a strategic autonomy.

The Work Programme 2023 gives an overview of the main standardization developments and strategic priority areas CEN and CENELEC are ready to implement in 2023, across 14 business sectors. For each sector, the reader will find a list of the technical bodies involved in carrying out the work, the number of standards published by CEN and CENELEC, and a detailed overview of the topics where standardization work is expected.

The Work Programme also presents a focus on three horizontal business topics, key to meet today’s challenges: Accessibility, Sustainability and Smart Technologies. A particular focus is put on Sustainability and Smart Technologies, as they are instrumental to help Europe achieve the twin green and digital transitions.

Finally, the last chapter gives an horizontal overview on the most important strategic highlights that will shape CEN and CENELEC’s development over the course of 2023 and beyond – with, among them, the continuing implementation of Strategy 2030 and the enhanced cooperation with the European institutions in the framework of the new European Standardization Strategy.

2023 promises to be an exciting, deeply transformative year. CEN and CENELEC are looking forward to working together with their members and partners and with the European institutions to build a European Standardization system that is effective, inclusive and future-oriented, to the benefit of Europe’s economy, industry and citizens.

The Work Programme can be found online on CEN and CENELEC’s website in two versions:

Also, this year the Work Programme will be accompanied by our #SectorTalks: a series of videos in which CEN and CENELEC Project Managers will share the main insights about their area of work and what to expect for 2023.
