CYS participation at the 6th International Conference on Digital Heritage EUROMED 2016

6th International Conference on Digital Heritage Euromed 2016, will be held in Cyprus on 31 October -3 November, 2016 at Filoxenia conference center in Nicosia. The conference is under the initiative of the Digital Heritage Laboratory of the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK). The Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS), as the national Standards body of Cyprus, supports the event.CYS mission is the promotion of standardization for the development of quality both in the private and public sector, in order to ensure stable improvement of the quality of life within the Cypriot society and economy. The conservation of cultural heritage can play a vital part and can be a valuable tool for our island.

Standardisation and Cultural heritage are interrelated. The protection of our cultural Heritage can be ensured by involve standards which will help conservations and professionals in the conservation and restoration work. CYS is as a full member of the European Standardisation Technical Committee, CEN/TC 346: Conservation of Cultural heritage. The main objective of CEN TC 346 is to develop standards and to promote best practices in methodologies and materials used in maintenance, repair and restoration and conservation of cultural heritage.

CYS participates actively in the conference on 2 November which and Mr Vasco Fassina, President of the European Technical Committee CEN/TC 346:Conservation of Cultural Heritage, will be a keynote speaker. Mr. Fassina will honor the conference with his presence and he will make a presentation about standardization activities in the field of Conservation of Cultural Heritage.

CYS, through its contribution to the 2016 Euromed, aims to inform all attendees about the link of standardization and cultural heritage as well as the advantages of implementation to standardization procedure to improve the quality of conservation of cultural heritage that is so vital in the sustainability and continuous growth of Cyprus.. Furthermore this presentation of Mr. Fassina will assist all stakeholders to understand the philosophy and added value of standardisation and attract the interest of professionals and experts for future involvement in this issue.

Additionally, through CYS, experts from the public and private sector can get involved and contribute to the European Standardisation, thus promoting national interests, and be continuously informed on the progress of all Standardization matters in the Conservation of cultural issues.

Mr Vasco Fassina

He served the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage in the Venice Superintendence for 40 years as senior researcher and Director of the Scientific Laboratory of Venice Superintendence with the responsibility to co-ordinate and promote interdisciplinary investigation projects aimed at conservation of historical building and wall paintings materials. He was involved for 25 years in International Training Programme for conservation of cultural heritage as teacher, coordinator and director of the biennial International Stone Conservation Course of UNESCO-ICCROM held in Venice.

Teaching activities at International level as Visiting Professor: in the Sino-Italy cooperation Project “Training in the Restoration and Conservation of the Chinese Cultural Heritage” in 2004 and 2007, in the International Course of University School of Monument Conservation in Rhodos, Crete, Ravello, for the Faculty of Architecture in Rosario (Argentina) and Salvador de Bahia (Brazil). In 2004 he was appointed Chairman of CEN/TC 346. The European Committee for the standardization in the field of Conservation of Cultural Heritage. In 2012 he has been appointed as Chairman of the national standardization commission for Cultural Heritage.

Actually is teaching chemistry applied to conservation and diagnostics techniques for investigation and conservation at Italian Universities and Academy of Fine Arts in Milano, Brescia, Napoli, and Verona. In 2007-2008 he was appointed by the General Direction for Cooperation and Development of the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry to evaluate the feasibility study for the establishment of Longmen Stone Relics Conservation Center and of Dazu Stone Monuments Conservation Center respectively located in the Middle and in the South West of China.

The Cyprus National Organisation for Standardisation also known as CYS operates as a company under private law and the sole shareholder is the Government. It is managed by a 7-member Board of Directors representing 2 ministries (the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism) and private sector bodies such as the Cyprus Consumers Association (CCA), the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (CEIF), the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (TCC).

CYS is a full member of the European Standardisation Committee CEN, the European (Electrotechnical Standardisation Committee CENELEC) and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). CYS is also a full member of the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

CYS participates actively in the European and International standardization process promoting at the same time the national interests and the application of European and International Standards by Cypriot businesses.
