Food & Biotechnology

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has been very active in the Food and Biotechnology Sector. There is a great interest in food quality and safety at a European level, which has led to the rapid development of standardization in this sector, both at the European technical committees’ level and the development of standards relating to food, laboratory methods of food analysis, materials which come in contact with food etc.

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has already issued around 400 standards, which relate mainly to sampling and analysis methods, and continues to work on a program covering a wide range of topics.

CEN works also with various bodies such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission. CEN has developed ten European standards, among which have been adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission as general methods. At the same time, CEN is a member of MoniQA (Monitoring and Quality Assurance in the food supply chain), a European network dealing with quality and food safety issues and funded by the European Union.
