The increasing interest to improve the quality of health services both on a national level but in Europe as a whole has created a common platform on healthcare issues. The European Standardisation is very active in the healthcare sector, both in the set up of technical committees as well as in drafting and publishing harmonized standards. Additionally several European Technical Committees cooperate with the respective Committees of ISO (International Organisation for Standardization).

Additionally, the European Standardisation Committee (CEN), in order to reinforce standardisation in healthcare has created since December 2005 the CEN Advisory Board for Healthcare Standards (ABHS). The main objective of ABHS is to support and coordinate the healthcare technical committees as well as to handle the Mandates from the European Commission to CEN, on healthcare standardisation.
