Health & Safety

The Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS) as the National Standardization body participates actively in the European and international standardisation process, promoting at the same time the national interests and the implementation of European and international standards

in the Cyprus businesses, services and the society in general.

Health & Safety is a sector in which the European Standardization Committee (CEN) has been very active. The increasing interest in Europe on the improvement of the work environment and the safety of employees led to the rapid increase of standardisation in this sector, both in the set up of European Technical committees as well as in drafting and publishing harmonized standards. Additionally several European Technical Committees cooperate with the respective Committees of ISO (International Organisation for Standardization).

The Health & Safety sector in CEN has been divided into the following two sub sectors:

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) - linked with a large number of standardization fields such as machinery, pressure equipment, personal protective equipment, transport and electrotechnical matters. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – linked to standards to meet the health and safety requirements of the directive for personal protective equipment (89/686/EEC).
