Mechanical Engineering

The sector of Mechanical Engineering is one of the most important in the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), considering that at the moment there are 62 active European Technical Committees for this sector (Table 1). These committees have published the last years many harmonized standards which they support up to 14 New Approach Directives.

Cyprus Organization for Standardization (CYS) as a member of European Standards Organizations CEN, CENELEC and ETSI participates in the technical committees that develop the European Standards. As a member, CYS also has the right to submit comments on the drafts of European Standards and at the final stage of the standards approval (Formal Vote), it participates with a weighted vote.

For the achievement of consensus spirit of adoption of the European Standards, CYS has formed Mirror Committees (MCs) with representatives from the Private Sector of Cyprus industry and services, as well as representatives of the Public Sector. During the Public Enquiry (prEN) status of the standards, Mirror Committees are able to examine the draft text of these standards and state their position and cogitation of the sequences for the Cyprus industry and economy. Any comments are brought into attention of the European Technical Committees in charge, via the CYS.
