Building & Civil Engineering

The entrance of Cyprus to the European Union and the application of European Standardisation in Cyprus have imported radical changes in the sector of construction.

The Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS) has the obligation to adopt the European Standards, to withdraw the equivalent National Standards, to promote the European Standards and to support the industry in their effort of application of all these European Standards. In order to achieve this smooth adaptation to the European Standartisation, the CYS, where it is required, recommends the set up of National Technical Committees what they study the European Standards and they consult CYS proportionally, eg if standards need to be withdrawn, the preparation of National Annexes or the development of Supplementary Standards.

The Standardisation in the construction products and civil engineering sector has many particularities as is the sector where most of the Cypriot National Standards have been created to date but also the sector with the most drastic changes because of the application of the Directive on Construction Products (CPD).
The CPD, that is also legislation in Cyprus, places the basic requirements which must be satisfied by the construction companies but also import new references as Harmonised Standards, European Technical Approvals and CE marking.
