Scope of Work

As a member of the committee, you have the opportunity to influence national, European, and international standardisation deliverables in the fields of gaseous and liquid fuels (including petroleum, synthetic and biological origin), solid biofuels, biomass for energy, biomethane and hydrogen. They address appliances, firelighters, coal‑derived products and fuel labelling, as well as hydrogen in energy systems and natural gas standards. These standards define terminology, procedures, specifications and performance criteria for fuels and related energy carriers.

The scope includes the development of standards and other standardisation deliverables for fuels of various forms: liquid and gaseous fuels from petroleum, synthetics and bio‑sources, solid biofuels, solid recovered fuels and sustainably produced biomass. They set terminology, sampling and analytical methods, fuel classification and quality requirements, plus testing and labelling standards. CEN/TC 281 specifies appliances and firelighters for barbecues and CEN/TC 317 covers coal pyrolysis derivatives. CEN/CLC/JTC 6, ISO/TC 197 and ISO/TC 193 establish hydrogen and natural gas standards for transport and grid applications. The work supports harmonization of fuel quality, safety, environmental sustainability and regulatory alignment with EU energy and climate policies.

As a committee member, you will have the opportunity to participate in international and/or European work. CYS MC 5.03 monitors and contributes to the work of the following European and international technical committees:
