Scope of Work
The Energy Performance of Buildings refers to the energy behavior of a building, meaning the amount of energy required for its operation, such as heating, cooling, domestic hot water, ventilation, and lighting. By improving the energy performance of buildings, energy consumption, operating costs, and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.
As a member of the committee, you have the opportunity to influence national, European, and international standardisation deliverables in the field of Energy Performance of Buildings, which support the implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) which has been adopted by the European Union. This directive sets minimum requirements for the energy performance of new and existing buildings, promotes the energy renovation of buildings, and encourages the use of renewable energy sources.
The scope of work of the committee includes the development of standards and other standardisation deliverables for buildings’ energy performance and systems, which plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall sustainability, efficiency, and functionality of buildings. This work involves defining methods and indicators for evaluating the energy performance of buildings, considering factors such as heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic hot water, and lighting. It also includes the standardisation of ventilation systems to ensure adequate indoor air quality and thermal comfort while minimizing energy use. In parallel, standards address the design, installation, and maintenance of heating and water-based cooling systems, promoting optimal performance, energy savings, and user comfort. Additionally, the integration of building automation, control systems, and building management technologies is a key focus area, enabling intelligent energy use, real-time monitoring, remote control, and improved system interoperability. These combined efforts support the development of energy-efficient, smart buildings that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering operating costs, and aligning with European climate and energy policy objectives.
As a committee member, you will have the opportunity to participate in international and/or European work. CYS MC 5.06 monitors and contributes to the work of the following European technical committees:
European Technical Committees
- CEN/TC 156 – Ventilation for Buildings
- CEN/TC 228 – Heating Systems and Water-based Cooling Systems in Buildings
- CEN/TC 247 – Building Automation, Controls and Building Management
- CEN/TC 371 – Energy Performance of Buildings
