Shared Green Deal

Social sciences & Humanities for Achieving a Responsible, Equitable and Desirable GREEN DEAL

Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS) has been successfully selected as a Local Experiment Partner, within the Project «SHARED GREEN DEAL: Social sciences & Humanities for Achieving a Responsible, Equitable and Desirable GREEN DEAL’ — ‘SHARED GREEN DEAL (01.02.2022 - 31.01.2027), coordinated by ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY HIGHER EDUCATION CORPORATION (ARU) and funded by the European Commission within the framework of the Horizon 2020 programme.

CYS will run a social experiment on the stream of CIRCULAR ECONOMY, focusing on Construction and Buildings.

During this Experiment CYS will establish a Local Accelerator Hub (LAH) that will gather and share knowledge about good practices in sustainable and circular business models to support innovation in local businesses and nudge the introduction of circular economy concepts; identify local needs and challenges; and co-create solutions.

For the purpose of this experiment CYS will host a series of workshops to map current practices and identify good practices, identify and develop common local circular business solutions and identify core user needs and behaviours.

Furthermore, CYS will organise a local circular business award aiming to highlight the best ideas of the local businesses registered in the LAH to incorporate sustainable circular economy in their business models.

About the Project

SHARED GREEN DEAL’s core goal is to stimulate shared actions on Green Deal initiatives across Europe, by providing Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) tools to support the implementation of 8 EU Green Deal policy areas, at the local and regional level.

SHARED GREEN DEAL is structured around lessons from a set of 24 social experiments that target six specific priority Green Deal topics (Clean Energy, Circular Economy, Efficient Renovations, Sustainable Mobility, Sustainable Food, Preserving Biodiversity), all of which contribute to the climate action and zero pollution ambitions of the Green Deal.

Mobilising industry

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Mobilising industry for a clean and circular economy

The EU’s transition to a circular economy will reduce pressure on natural resources and will create sustainable growth and new employment opportunities.

Circular Economy presents an opportunity to achieve the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality target and to halt biodiversity loss. The involvement of local governments, and local small and medium-sized enterprises, has the potential to drastically increase the roll-out of a circular economy and benefit citizens across Europe, as well as their local economies.

Construction is the most resource-intensive and waste-production sector in Cyprus and that is why the social experiment will focus on constructions and buildings. A major concern is construction and demolition waste (CDW) management, as well as the sustainable management of the islands limited natural resources. Cyprus businesses can demonstrate a few successful examples of circular practices, and the experiment will aim to collect them and improve their visibility and applicability throughout the industry and market. Through the experiment, challenges will be identified, and common circular business solutions will be pursued.
